Search Companies House to verify a client's company number and auto-fill their registered name and address.

What the Companies House lookup does

The Companies House lookup searches the UK Companies House public register by company name. When you select a result it auto-fills the company name, registered address, and postcode into the client form. This ensures you are using the official registered name and address for the company.

How to use the lookup

The lookup is available inside the Add Client and Edit Client forms, in the "Auto-fill from Register" section. Type the company name into the search field and press Enter or click the search button. Results appear in a scrollable list below.

Reading the results

Each result row shows the company name, company number badge, postcode badge, and a status badge (active is highlighted; dissolved or other statuses appear in neutral style). Click a row to select the company and auto-fill the form.

What gets filled in

Selecting a company fills in the company name field, address (built from address line 1, address line 2, locality, and region), and postcode. The company number itself is not stored as a separate field on the client record — it is used only to identify the correct match during the lookup.

Check the status badge before selecting

Always check that the company status is "active" before selecting a result. Selecting a dissolved or liquidated company will auto-fill their details, but this may indicate the carrier is no longer legally operating.

Use alongside the EA lookup

For waste carriers, use the EA Register lookup first to get the carrier registration number, then use Companies House to verify and fill in the official registered address. This gives you the most complete and accurate client record.

Search is triggered manually

Unlike the EA lookup which searches as you type, the Companies House lookup requires you to press Enter or click the search button. This avoids excessive API calls on a slower search endpoint.

Common Mistakes

• Pressing Enter while filling in a different field after typing in the search box — this can accidentally trigger the form submit rather than the company search. Always click the search icon button to be safe.

• Assuming the first result is always the right company — many businesses have similar names. Check the company number and postcode to confirm you are selecting the correct entity.

• Using Companies House alone for waste carriers — Companies House records company registration, not EA carrier registration. You still need the EA lookup to verify the carrier is legally registered to transport waste.
