1. What is a RAMS?

A RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement) is a combined document that identifies hazards on a job, assesses their risk, lists control measures to reduce that risk, and describes the safe sequence of work. RAMS are required before high-risk activities and are expected by clients, principal contractors, and HSE inspectors. They are legally required under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

2. Step 1: Project Details

Enter the basic project information. RAMS Title and Assessor Name are required. The document auto-saves after you enter the title, so you can navigate between steps without losing data.

Be specific — the title appears on the PDF cover page.
Project name
Site address
Rachel Osei
The person who conducted the risk assessment.
Defaults to today.
Recommended — RAMS should be reviewed regularly or when circumstances change.

3. Step 2: Hazard Identification

The hazards step shows a built-in Hazard Library on the left and your selected hazards on the right. Browse the library categories, click a hazard to add it to your document, then fill in the likelihood, severity, risk rating, and control measures for each one. The risk rating is calculated automatically from likelihood multiplied by severity.

Calculated as Likelihood × Severity. Colour-coded: green (1–4), amber (5–9), red (10–25).

4. Step 3: Method Statement

Write the safe system of work: the step-by-step sequence of operations, specific precautions, and any special instructions. This is a free-text field. Be thorough — this section explains exactly how the work will be done safely.

5. Step 4: Sign-off

Collect signatures from anyone who needs to review and approve the RAMS. Each signature captures the signer's name, role, the date, and a handwritten digital signature. The RAMS must be saved (as at least Draft) before signatures can be added. Multiple signatures can be collected from different approvers.

6. Step 5: Preview & Save

The Preview step shows a summary of the full RAMS. From here you can save the document in three states: Save as Draft (work in progress), Submit for Review (ready for manager approval), or Approve & Save (final approved state). You can also download a professional PDF version of the RAMS.

Auto-save activates after entering the title
Once you enter a RAMS Title and move to another step, the document auto-saves every 2 seconds. You can close the browser and return later — your draft will be waiting.
Signatures require a saved RAMS
You cannot add signatures to a RAMS that has not been saved yet. If the Sign-off step shows a warning about saving first, go to the Preview step, click Save as Draft, then return to Sign-off.
RAMS should be reviewed when circumstances change
Set a Review Date when creating the RAMS and revisit it whenever the scope of work, site conditions, or personnel change. An out-of-date RAMS provides no legal protection.
Common Mistakes
Adding hazards from the library but not filling in control measures — a hazard without controls is an incomplete risk assessment.
Setting all risk ratings to 1 (the minimum) — this is not credible to an inspector and does not reflect reality.
Not collecting any signatures — an unsigned RAMS is not considered approved.
Downloading the PDF before saving the RAMS — the Download PDF button is disabled until the document has been saved.
