Section A — Waste Description

Describe the waste, pick EWC codes, select containment types, and enter the quantity.

1. A1 Description
2. EWC Codes
3. A2 Containment
4. A3 Quantity

1. A1 — Description of waste

Write a plain-English description of the waste being transferred. Be specific: include the source (e.g. "kitchen demolition"), the material type (e.g. "mixed timber, plasterboard, bricks"), and any relevant characteristics. This description appears verbatim on the printed WTN.

What are you picking up?
Section A — Waste Description
Mixed construction and demolition waste including timber offcuts, plasterboard, and concrete rubble from residential renovation
Be specific — include the waste source and material types. Vague descriptions like "general waste" may not satisfy an EA inspector.

2. EWC Codes

Select one or more European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes that classify the waste. Use the search box to search by code number or keyword. Multiple EWC codes can be selected — they are displayed as removable badges. At least one EWC code is required for Section A to be considered complete.

Search by number (e.g. "17 01") or keyword (e.g. "concrete"). Select all codes that apply.

3. A2 — Containment type

Select every containment type that applies to this load. The options are: Loose, Drum, Bag/sack, Skip, Vehicle/trailer, Tank, RoRo container, IBC, and Other. At least one must be selected. If you select "Other", a text input appears so you can describe the containment type.

4. A3 — Quantity

Enter the quantity of waste. You can use any unit that is appropriate (tonnes, cubic metres, number of skips, kilograms). If the quantity is estimated rather than weighed, toggle the "Est." button — this appends "(est.)" to the quantity on the printed note, which is legally acceptable under the Duty of Care.

What are you picking up?
Section A — Waste Description
1 x 8 yard skip (approx. 1.5 tonnes)
Include the unit. If the exact weight is unknown, toggle "Est." to mark it as an estimate.

Use the Load Library
If you transfer the same waste type regularly, save the Section A details as a Saved Load. Next time, click "Saved Loads" in Section A to instantly fill description, EWC codes, and quantity.
Multiple EWC codes
A single load can contain waste of different EWC classifications. Add all applicable codes — for example, a mixed demolition load might include 17 01 07 (mixed construction materials) and 17 02 01 (wood).
Common Mistakes
Using a generic description like "general waste" — EA inspectors expect specific material types and sources.
Forgetting to select a containment type — at least one must be checked or Section A will not be marked complete.
Not toggling "Est." when the quantity is estimated — this is a legal requirement if the weight has not been weighed.
